Edward V. Bassett, 49, of Carmel, California, passed away on November 9th at the Hospice House after a year long battle with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He is survived by his wife Linda, his three children, John, Kimry and Heather, his parents Russ and Teresa Bassett of Lake San Marcos, CA, his brother Gary of Huntington Harbor, CA and sister Emilie Mason of Fresno, CA. Born June 4, 1945 in Kendallville, Indiana, his family moved to Whittier, California where he attended Whittier High School and was very active in sports. He devoted much of his life to the Russ Bassett Company in Whittier, where under his leadership, the company grew to be the world’s leading manufacturer of microfilm filing cabinets. He later moved to Lexington, Kentucky to pursue his love horses, where he became active in the breeding and promotion of the American Saddlebred horse. Moving to Carmel in 1982, he and his wife started Reminisce, a successful antique and craft shop and later, Equine Archives, a unique library of rare equine books and collectibles. Ed Bassett was athletic and energetic; he loved creating things and working with his hands. He was a successful businessman, a true craftsman and a perfectionist at all he sought to do. His generous nature, contagious laugh and boyish smile will be greatly missed by those who had the opportunity to know him. He spent many happy hours at the family cabin in Wawosa, Yosemite, where his parents are developing a memorial library in Ed’s honor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Ed Bassett Charity Foundation, Fresno.
