Jeremiah Bassett, fourth in descent from William Bassett, who came over in the “Fortune” in 1621, was a farmer and large land owner, who had holdings of land between Bassett and Crane streets, North Taunton. His home on Bassett street, near Watson’s Pond, was a long, story-and-a-half structure, upon one of the chimneys of which were the letters and dates “J.B. 1778 and 1787,” indicating that the main part of the house was built then years or so before the smaller portion, and the ell was built on as a room for the pastor of the parish. Two chimneys led down into the rooms with large fireplaces, the latter in the comfortable living room being five feet in length, with narrow shelf, high mantel, and with a cupboard at the right of it, the room next to that, on the other side of the chimney having a fireplace about three feet long and a cupboard. There was commodious kitchen with a smaller fireplace, and adjoining the kitchen was a bedroom eight or nine feet square. There were thus four rooms in the front end, the ell leading off the kitchen and pantry, and adjoining was the “pastor’s room”. In its last days, the house had no occupant, and went to decay, it being torn down in 1930.
A thorough genealogical line of her branch of the Bassett family has been traced by Miss Bassett, (to which space cannot be given in these short sketches of old residences), and in the line is the name of Peregrine White, the first-born of English parents in the Old Colony, so that the family has “Mayflower” descent. William Bassett eventually settled in Bridgewater, and his son, Joseph, also settled there with his parents. Jeremiah, the grandson of William, was school teacher in Norton, and removing to North Taunton, he bought a house on what is now Field street, east of the cemetery and Freewill Baptist church, and later had Baptist church meetings in his own home. Jeremiah IV, was next in line; and then came Jeremiah V, who was a soldier in the Revolutionary army, and built an addition to the homestead.
