Sudden Death Of Mr. Edward Bassett
The sudden death of Mr. Edward Bassett of the firm J. Bassett and Sons, carriage builders, etc., od Durgates, Wadhurst – early on the morning of December 29th, came as a great shock to his relations and friends. He went to be apparently in good health on the 28t. He woke at 3 o’clock, and after asking his wife the time, gasped for breath and died. An inquest was held at Carpenter’s Restaurant on Friday afternoon by the Coroner of East Sussex, Mr. Vere Benson. After Dr. Fazan had given evidence of a post mortem examination he had made on the body, a verdict of death from natural causes was returned, death being due to valvular disease of the heart. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at the Parish Church amidst many signs of esteem and respect and deep sympathy for the sorrowing relatives. The funeral service was conducted by the Vicar, the rev. Leslie Stevenson, assisted by the Rev. H.F. Tonkin. The coffin, which was of polished elm with brass furniture, bore the inscription:- “Edward Bassett, died December 29th, aged 35 years.” In addition to the family mourners there was a large attendance of tradesmen and others. The floral tokens were numerous and beautiful. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr. J. Bassett. He was of a very retiring, modest and kindly disposition, and an exceedingly clever workman, and his loss will be much felt in many years.
