Death Of Mr. J.E. Bassett
Well-known in newspaper industry
Mr. John Edward Bassett, for many years a director of the Kentish Times Ltd., of which he was chairman from February, 1949, until March, 1952, died early on Tuesday in his 83rd years.
The fourth son of Mr. Rowland George Bassett, founder of the then Kentish District Times series of newspapers, Mr. Bassett became the owner of a newspaper at Forest Hill when he was 21. Disposing of this three years later, he joined the Kentish Times as manager of the works and commercial departments with his brother, the late Mr. Robert G. Bassett, as editor. He was associated with his brother in forming the Kentish Times Provident Fund of which he was hon. secretary for 26 years.
He retired from active management in 1932, but maintained a practical interest in the business as a director, and later as chairman, until ill-health caused him to relinquish these positions last March. He was then appointed advisory director.
Mr. Bass was instrumental in founding the Kent Newspaper Proprietor’s Association, of which he was the first hon. secretary, and on giving up this work after 24 years, was elected life president. He was a substitute councilor in the Newspaper Society, a member of the Press Club and an associate of the Institute of Journalists.
Mr. Bassett, whose wife died some years ago, leaves two sons – Mr. Edward R. Bassett, the present chairman and joint managing director of the Kentish Times Ltd., and Mr. Alfred J.R Bassett, who is a director.
The funeral takes place today (Friday) at All Saints Church, Foots Cray, at 2.30 p.m., and at South London Crematorium, Streatham, at 3.40 p.m.
