TONY’S FIRST BOOK
Tony Bassett, a journalist who worked on national newspapers in London, England for more than thirty-seven years, has just had his first novel published.
Tony was on the Saturday staff of the Sunday People newspaper between 1980 and 2002 and has worked as a freelance for various other national newspapers in the UK. He also worked for a while as a stringer for the National Enquirer in the US.
He began writing books three years ago after more than forty years in journalism.
Smile Of The Stowaway concerns an English couple, Bob and Anne, who discover a stowaway beneath their motor home on returning from a holiday in France.
Instead of handing him over to the authorities, they provide the friendly stranger with shelter and find him a job on a farm. Then their new friend is arrested by police and accused of murder. Could this man from 6,000 miles away be guilty of the horrific murder in an idyllic Kentish hamlet? Or is the real killer still at large? Anne turns detective, battling against circumstantial evidence and police bungling in an effort to uncover the truth.
The book was being published on December 1st by the Conrad Press in Canterbury. It is also available to buy on Amazon. Tony’s literary agent, James Essinger, will be offering the book to US publishers next year.
The idea for the novel came to Tony after he wrote a report for the British national dailies in September 2014 about a father and daughter who found a stowaway beneath their vehicle when they returned to Kent. In the real-life incident, the man was handed to the police.
Tony, a divorced father of five, said: ‘I thought the dramatic discovery of a stranger beneath your vehicle when you arrive home would prove an interesting starting point for a book, and it developed from there. It took me about three months to write and almost immediately afterwards I was fortunate enough to find a literary agent in Kent to represent me.’ Since producing the Stowaway book, Tony, who lives in North Kent, has written three other novels which he hopes will be published soon.
