David was a very distant Bassett descendant being descended from Elizabeth Bassett of Blore. He wrote many articles on the Bassett family of early England, however his most published book related to the Bassett family was “Swinscoe, Blore and the Bassetts”.
Some may remember that David flew over from England and joined us for the 1997 National Bassett family reunion held in Salt Lake City.

David Swinscoe
David Swinscoe of Exmouth, died suddently on 8th February 2019. Born on 12th February 1929 in Hull in Yorkshire, David whose first name was John after his father, lived in Exmouth for most of his retirement and called it home. David worked in computers all over the world, during his long working career, but his passion lay in local history research and he published two books relating to the parish of Blore with Swinscoe and Calton in Staffordshire. He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret, his two children, Tony and Martine and grandchildren Andy, Paul and Oliver. The Celebration of his life will take place on Thursday 7th March 2019 at 1.45pm at East Devon Crematorium. Family flowers only with donations on the Just Giving site for Youth Hostel Association, of which he was a life member from the age of 16 years.

The first half of this work is devoted to the history of two Staffordshire villages, Swinscoe and Blore. The second half details the family history of the Bassetts of Blore, beginning with Sir John Basset of Cheadle and Blore (d. 1411), and continuing through the last Bassett to represent this line, Sir John’s sixth great-grand daughter Elizabeth, Lady Cavendish (d. 1643).
The Bassetts of Blore were a junior branch of the Bassets of Sapcote, heirs of their cousins the Bassets of Parkhill. The cadet lines of this branch include the Bassets of Brailsford, the Bassets of Fauld and the Bassetts of Hints. Lady Elizabeth is an ancestress of HM the Queen (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).
Mr. Swinscoe is the recognized authority on this history, having invested several decades in researching primary records to bring this branch of the family to light.
