Darwin Duane Bassett

Darwin Duane Bassett passed away April 5, 2024. He was born in Nashville, MI on June 30, 1954 to the late Richard and Ellen Bassett. He graduated from Maple Valley High School, class of 1972.

Darwin grew up on a farm with his four siblings; David, Dennis, Doug and Dawn Bassett. There he gained an appreciation of nature and poured himself into the labor of working on the family farm. After leaving the farm, he worked in numerous industries before attempting to become an entrepreneur, starting his own chimney sweeping and home repair consulting business that he continued until his retirement.

Darwin met his wife Sharon in 1978 and later married August 30, 1980. Darwin and Sharon have three beautiful children, Eric (Wife-Danielle, children- Grayson, Bennett, Oliver and Nathaniel), Nicholas Bassett (wife- Anne, children- Theadore and Evelyn) and Jessica Lindner (Husband- Dennis, children – Joseph, Noa Mae, and child expected Oct ’24).

Darwin enjoyed sharing his interests and spending time with his family. Darwin loved to play basketball with his daughter Jessica, working on electronics projects with Nick, building rockets with Eric, and volunteering as a self-defense instructor for 15+ years. He loved to attend rock concerts with his nephew Mike and enjoyed spending family time at summer BBQs near his hometown.

Darwin devoted his life to his children’s success and will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellen and Richard Bassett, Father-in law Bernie McWilliams, brother-in-law Dennis (Nancy) McWilliams, and sister-in-law Betty Bassett. He is survived by his wife Sharon Bassett and his three children Eric (Danielle), Nicholas (Annie), Jessica (Dennis), His siblings David, Dennis (Mary), Doug and Dawn Bassett, and mother-in-law Mary Jane McWilliams, Sue (Bob) Krygier, Kathy (Tom) Wachter, Rose (Jack) Klein. His grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Grayson, Bennett, Oliver, Nathaniel, Evleyn, Theadore, Joseph and Noa Mae, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on Thursday, April 11th 11:00 AM with Father Tom Brown presiding. A visitation will be held at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac on Wednesday from 4-7 PM.
