An Almshouse Burned Down

A Heavy Loss for Philo Bassett
ANSONIA, Conn., May 2. – The house of Philo Bassett in Huntington, which is also the town almshouse, was burned to the ground yesterday afternoon. Mr. Bassett and his wife were away at the time, having gone to Bridgeport to attend the wedding of their son, Edward. Flames were discovered by a neighbor, who gave the alarm, and with other neighbors got out the inmates. Three women, one who was helpless, had a narrow escape, as flames had entered their room in advance of the rescuers. Part of the furniture was saved. The loss is probably $2,000. Mr. Bassett had no insurance. He returned after the destruction was complete and his wife was prostrated over the loss. Mr. Bassett is left in an almost destitute state and is 70 years of age. The paupers were distributed among the neighbors last night. The fire originated from a defective chimney.
