Death of Mr. Edward Bassett, Omagh.
We deeply regret to have to announce the death of Mr. Edward Bassett, a well-known and highly respected resident in the town of Omagh for many years, which took place on Wednesday afternoon. For some years back he had been in failing health, and during the past eighteen months had been constantly under medical treatment. Notwithstanding, it was no generally known that the end was so near, the news of it came as a shock to the many friends of the family. Deceased came to Omagh 27 years ago, and was managing clerk to Mr. T.C. Dickie, with whom he was employed during all the time he was in Omagh, remaining in the same position with Messrs. Dickie and Carson after the partnership had been entered into. A capable business man, he was respected not only in the town of Omagh, but throughout the county, and numerous were the anxious inquiries made by country people during his long and tedious illness. Mr. Bassett at one time took a very active part in connection with the Omagh Young Men’s Christian Literary Association, and many a stirring debate he had with the prominent townsmen of that day – Mr. Nathaniel Carson, Mr. Quaile, and others. In public matters deceased was at all times deeply interested, and was ever ready to lend his aid when it was required. A fluent speaker, he had the mastery of every subject he dealt with. As and Urban Councillor he served for three years, but he was perhaps better known in his connection with technical education. A member of the Tyrone County Committee of Technical Education and the Omagh Committee, he died what he could to secure for young people a thorough education. Not many months ago he travelled to Dungannon to attend a meeting of the County Committee, although he was not then really fit to be out of bed. In fact he had Omagh’s welfare at heart, and he thought no one could do too much in furthering its interests. He particularly enjoyed to recall the early days when the old Christian Literary Association was in vogue, and received fresh inspiration from the recollection of the arguments so finely expressed by those who had gone before him. Deceased was a member of the First Omagh Presbyterian Church. He was predeceased about twelve years ago by his wife, and since then his eldest daughter devoted her life to the care of the family, nobly sacrificing herself in tending to her father through his lengthy illness, and in acting as a second mother to her brothers and sisters. During these twelve years Mrs. Dickie, who was present at Mrs. Bassett’s death, has been a kind, generous, and unfailing friend of the family. She was especially thoughtful about Mr. Bassett in his long illness, and he greatly appreciated her kindness and sympathy, and made very touching reference to it the day before he died in expressing his gratitude. Deceased is survived by two sons (one of whom is in Canada) and six daughters, and the utmost sympathy is extended to them in their terrible bereavement. It should also be mentioned that Dr. Duncan, who devotes the greatest skill and attention to his patients,, was present both before and at the last, and everything a medical man could possibly do was accomplished by him.
The funeral will take place at 10 o’clock tomorrow (Saturday) to Cappagh Burying ground.
