Alice Floy Bassett
Fellow Rapid City resident Alice Floy Bassett (unrelated to lawyer Alice Bassett Muller), was born in Illinois on 16 October 1882 in English immigrant George Bassett and Elise Rulifson Bassett, who died when Alice was young. After graduation from Austin High School on the west side of Chicago, she arrived in Rapid City and worked as a stenographer in the law office of Frank D. Banks. There, she began studying law in June 1909 and passed the South Dakota bar in April 1913. Two years later, Bassett married lawyer David Richards of Newell, South Dakota. The couple had three children. Alice Bassett Richards apparently did not continue her legal career after marriage. She died at the age of fourth-four on 12 September 1927, her occupation listed as housewife. Her obituary misidentified her as the first woman to be admitted to the bar in South Dakota.
