Juanita Jayroe Bassett (Picture included)
BASSETT, Juanita Jayroe, 86, departed this life peacefully Saturday, December 31, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Paul Toms Bassett; and her eldest son, Paul Jr. She is survived by her three children, Edith Ann Bassett (Steve), Peter Jayroe Bassett and Philip Johnson Bassett (Gretchen); two daughters-in-law, Christine Bassett Auman and Dione Bassett; five grandchildren, Luke, Sadie, Julia, Kerri and Joshua Bassett; and three siblings, Mildred Jayroe Truax, Julius Skinner Jayroe and Richard Olin Jayroe. Juanita was born and raised on Benvenue Plantation in Georgetown, S.C., where she was one of 10 children. She attended Winthrop College, earning a degree in education, playing field hockey and then becoming a teacher in Georgia. She moved with her family to Richmond, where she was able to enjoy landscaping and gardening at her home and assisting customers in retail. After retiring she was able to tend to her garden and her ever growing family. She was an active volunteer for several charities and in the Ginter Park community. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 5, at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at Ginter Park United Methodist Church. Interment to follow in Hollywood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ginter Park United Methodist Church.
