Esther F. Bassett, 94, Danville
DANVILLE ? Esther F. Bassett, 94, formerly of 16 Rushtown Road, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2015 at Nottingham Village Nursing Center, Northumberland.
She was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Rush Township, a daughter of the late Robert J. and Ellen Jane (Delong) Forney. On May 27, 1942, she married Russell F. Bassett who preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 2006, breaking a marital union of 63 years.
She graduated from Danville High School in 1937.
After high school, she thoroughly enjoyed working at J.J. Newberry in Danville.
She was a member of the former Rushtown Methodist Church, Rush Township, where she taught Sunday school and led youth groups and was later a member of St. Peter?s United Methodist Church, Riverside.
Esther was an excellent baker and she loved gardening, especillay caring for all her flower gardens. She was a 4-H leader and helped many girls learn to sew. Esther loved to read and do crossword puzzles. She and Russ had a love of the game Scrabble, and for the last 30 years of Russell?s lfie they had a date every evening with the Scrabble board. Above all, Esther was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family whom she adored.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jane B. and Kenneth Herman, of Danville; one grandson, Mark D. Bassett and his wife, Amber, of Bloomsburg; one granddaughter, Marcie H. Riebe and her husband, Peter, of Scrnaton; one great-grandson, Ty David Bassett; and daughter-in-law, Marie K. Bassett of Paradise.
She was preceded in death by one son, David E. Bassett in 2011; five brothers, Corey, James, Robert, Carl and Millard; and three sisters, Natalie Swartz, Bertha Pick and Mabel Scheetz. Esther was the last member of her immediate family.
Relatives and friends will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 10 Mahoning St., Danville, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Dr. Donald N. Hurley officiating.
Burial will follow in Rush Presbyterian Cemetery, Snydertown Road, Danville.
