      Dr. Jay Bass

Jay Jacquelyn Bass died at the age of 98 in Broomfield, Colorado on March 20, 2022. Born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Lawrence College, graduating Cum Laude in 1946. While attending the University of New Mexico the following year, Jay met and married James Bass of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They had two children.

Jay sang in choral groups and was active in League of Women Voters. She was an active sailor and participated in sailboat regattas with her husband, and continued sailing until age 74 when she solo sailed a Laser racing sailboat across Oklahoma City's Lake Hefner and back.

Dr. Bass was awarded a Ph.D in Sociology at Michigan State University in 1977, where she was a Graduate Assistant and a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society. She then served on the faculty of Kansas Newman College in Wichita, Kansas until 1983, after which she accepted a position at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in Chickasha, Oklahoma. During her 20 years as a Sociology professor, Dr. Bass published research papers, gave presentations for local groups and professional meetings, designed several innovative courses, and taught off-campus college courses.

Jay retired from USAO as Professor Emerita in 1997 and took up residency in Oklahoma City. There she enjoyed Oklahoma City Philharmonic concerts, swimming, and volunteering as a Traveler's Aid at the airport and with the Oklahoma City Orchestra League (OCOL). As an OCOL member, Jay took great pleasure in interviewing orchestra members and writing articles about them for the orchestra's publication, the OPUS.

Jay is survived by her children, Jocelyn Bass of Thornton, Colorado and Brian Bass of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death in 2012 by her former husband, James Bass. Online condolences may be left at https://www.inmemoriamservices.com/obituary/Jay-Bass. Her family would be grateful for contributions in memory of Jay to First Unitarian Church, 600 NW 13th, Oklahoma City, OK 73103.
