      Melva ?Gene? Bass

Melva Dolin ?Gene? Bass, 96 years young, died peacefully in her sleep in her home of 67 years on Saturday, June 25, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Phillips Bass, MD; parents, Bessie Mae Dolin Wilkerson and Gene Dolin; her ?Daddy?, Clyde Wilkerson; sister, Esther Dolin Charvat and brother, William Clyde Wilkerson.
Melva Louise Dolin was born in Hopewell, VA, September 9, 1925. As a baby, she received her nickname, Gene, when her father died. She started singing at the age of 3 and enjoyed singing throughout her life, in high school musicals and in church. She loved dancing the jitterbug while her sister played the piano and never lost her joy of hearing Big Band Swing music.
She attended the nursing program at University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, and graduated as an RN in 1947. While there she met Phil Bass of Wallace, VA and they married on December 20, 1947. They moved to Bristol, VA in 1955 to continue raising their family.
Gene was a long-time member of State Street United Methodist Church. She sang soprano in the church choir for over 50 years and participated in church circle. Her many talents and interests included sewing, knitting, tatting, and the art of macrame. She was an avid reader and was a member of the Gibbons Study Club. Science Fiction was a favorite and she was a huge fan of Star Trek. She was also a member of PEO, a philanthropic organization promoting the education of women. Once her children were grown, she returned to her nursing profession, working at the old Bristol Memorial Hospital and Memorial Hall and adding to her list of friends and associates.
She is survived by four children, Robert Leon Bass II (Jane), Barbara Bass Harrison, William
Phillips Bass, Jr. (Alice), and Linda Jane Bass; five grandchildren, Katie Bacon Turner (Roger),
Tiffany Anne Harrison, David Nelson Harrison, Jr. (Alisha), Sallie Bacon (Brian Oberlin), and William Phillips (Phillip) Bass III; six great grandchildren; and a sister-in law, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her cat, Smokey, allowed her to dote on him these past 11 years and she cherished his attentions as well!
As evidenced by her family, career and community, Gene loved nothing more than caring for others. She was a generous, loving Mother and Mother-in-Law, Grandmother and Great Grandmother extraordinaire. For the past few months she was expertly cared for at home by her family and Caris Hospice. We are very grateful to all but especially to her loving caregivers, Carolyn Hess and Lisa Belcher. Mom, you will be greatly missed. Love you always.
The family will greet friends to share memories on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at State Street United Methodist in Bristol, VA from 1:00 pm until a celebration of Gene's life at 2:00 pm with Pastor Laura Rasor officiating. A committal service will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
