MEMORIAL
Charlotte Marie Doby Bassett, 80, of 6935 Springwood Place NW, died Friday August 22, 2008 in her home from a long illness. Services: 11:00 AM Wednesday at New Jerusalem Church in God in Christ. The Pastor LeRoy Johnson will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Charlotte Marie Doby Bassett was born on January 28th 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama. She was given to us from the union of James Nelson Doby and Annie Bell Williams. Mother Bassett's surviving brother; Sylvester Doby resides in Chicago, Illinois. Mother Bassett was preceded in death by her three-brothers, Elder James Nelson Doby, Lewis R. Doby and Charles Doby.Charlotte Marie Doby attended Parker High school in Birmingham, Alabama and upon graduation; she attended Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama and later received her Nursing RN register nurses certification from the Grady Nursing School in 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia. On December 17th, 1947 she met and married Hurley Bassett Sr. in Memphis, Tennessee as he was returned from service in the United States Army. Her marriage to Bishop, Hurley Bassett Sr. spanned 60-years and together they produced eight children; Patricia A. Bassett, PhD, Harold Bassett, Hurley Bassett, Jr., Lovie Bassett, RN Nurse Practioner, Sylvester Sy Bassett, James N. Bassett, Roland I. Bassett and Carolyn E. Rucker, Ph.D. She leaves behind 25-grandchildren and 6-great grandchildren. In 1953 Hurley Bassett Sr. and Charlotte Marie Bassett moved from Davenport, Iowa to Cedar Rapids, where they became co-founders of the New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ located at 631 9th Ave. S.E. Her individual labor at New Jerusalem is too numerous mention, however, culinary skills coupled with her extraordinary hospitality for the saints was truly outstanding. Charlotte will be missed by her many friends and family.
