Richard Denkenberger
Richard Denkenberger, on the evening of Easter Sunday, April 21, 2000,
Richard Denkenberger 88, Alba, passed away quietly at his residence after a brief
illness. Born July 21, 1911 at Kingwood, WV, he was one of seven children in
the family of Joseph and Amelia (Carota) Denkenberger. His parents had
emigrated from Austria, instilling into their children the Old World wo
ethic. When he was eight years old the family moved to western Bradford Co.
where they established themselves as farmers. As a young man he met Harriet
Bassett of Grover and on August 3, 1940 they were united in marriage. Together
they worked their dairy on the outskirts of Alba, often also employed for a
number of years by Belmar Manufacturing Co. in Canton and later at Ward
Manufacturing in Blossburg where he remained for 23 years until he retired in
1973, but farming was always a top priority in his life. On August 3, 1990 Mr.
and Mrs. Denkenberger celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was an
avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in the surrounding woods and
streams. Another type of hunting occupied his time in later years, hunting for
wild ginseng. In the secret places known to but a few, he would reap a
bountiful harvest of the much sought after herb. As recently as last year he
could be found on the mountainside collecting roots and hauling them home.
Surviving are his daughter-in-law, Barbara Bassett; granddaughter and husband,
Gina and Chad Troublefield and two great-grandsons, all of Apex, NC; a sister;
Elizabeth (George) Bartosch, Horseheads, NY; numerous nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years; Harriet, step-son, C. Richard
Bassett; sisters; Amelia Andrus Chilson, Anna Wilcox, Elsie Collins; brothers,
Joseph Denkenberger, Jr., Michael Denkenberger. Calling hours will be held
Wednesday, April 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, 40
N. Center St., Canton. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, the 27th
at 1 p.m. with retired Pastor Jasper Smith officiating. Interment will follow
in Grover Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Mr. Denkenberger's name may be
directed to the Guthrie Hospice, RR4, Box 154, Towanda, PA or to a charity of
one's choice.
