      Monte P. Bassett
      Longtime Alaskan Monte Powell Bassett, 70, died Feb. 20 in San Diego, Calif., after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Easter Sunday, April 15, at Jewel Lake Baptist Church, 3340 Raspberry Rd. Born July 7, 1919 in Butte, Montana, she was raised in British Columbia, Canada. Mrs. Bassett came to Alaska more than 40 years ago. She traveled and worked as a chef for hotels and restaurants throughout the state, including the Aleutian Chain, Ketchikan, Juneau, Fairbanks, Point Barrow, Point Lay and Anchorage. For many of her years in Alaska, she made her home in Fairbanks. She owned and operated the Wig Wam Cafe and managed the restaurant in the Town Club in the 1950s. Mrs. Bassett was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sr., in 1967. She is survived by her sons, Joseph Jr. and William "Dal", both of Anchorage; three daughters, Darlene Bitnec, of Tennessee Colony, Texas, Debra Cole, of Anchorage, and Dari LeClair of San Diego; her friend, William Hensley, of Anchorage; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, 201 E. Third Ave., Anchorage, 99501, for the treatment of juvenile diabetes.
