VICTORIA - Mary Charles Baass, 93, of Victoria and San Antonio, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008 in San Antonio.
Mary Charles, a fifth generation Victorian, was born on Dec. 13, 1914 to Margaret Fox and Benjamin Bierman. Mrs. Baass devoted her life to the education of children in Victoria for 45 years. She started her teaching career in 1933 at Beck School, a country one-room schoolhouse previously located on the Upper Mission Valley Road. Seven years later she moved to Clark School and after six years she moved again to Mitchell School. In 1951, she opened Aloe Elementary School as principal and then later served as principal of Shields Elementary School. In 1967, Mrs. Baass opened Rowland Elementary School as principal where she served until she retired in 1985. In 1984, she was named Principal of the Year by the Texas Elementary Schools Principals Association.
Mrs. Baass was a member of the Associates of the Incarnate Word and the Catholic Daughters. Her involvement with both brought her great spiritual joy through the years. Mary Charles was also a member and past president of the Morning Study Club, and she volunteered faithfully at Twin Pines Nursing Home. In retirement she shared her love for the game of bridge by giving lessons for many years. Traveling with friends and family over the years gave her many treasured memories.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Baass Jr.; her two sisters, Margaret Bierman and Dolores Colvin; and many dear friends.
Mrs. Baass is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jerry Daggett of San Antonio and by her nephew and wife, Brenda and Bobby Urban, also of San Antonio. Mrs. Baass bequeathed her love of learning, her dedication to service, and her visionary understanding of a woman's role in society to her granddaughters. She is survived by her two grandchildren, Margaret Wright Daggett and husband Adam Mathieu, and Mary Charles Daggett and husband Regin Regino; and great-grandchildren: Mary Margaret Mathieu, Thomas Augustus Mathieu, Regin John Regino II, Margaret Mary Regino, and Ihle Charles Regino.
Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral, with Father Michael Harrold officiating.
