Gerry Bass
Geraldine E. Bass, 101, of Laurie, formerly of Decatur, Ill., died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019 in Laurie.
She was born Feb. 7, 1918 in Bingham, Ill. to Joel W. and Essie E. Abell.
She grew up on a farm in central Illinois, graduated in 1935 from Fillmore High School, and then moved to Decatur, Illinois.
She took post-graduate classes and worked for a CPA several years. She was a credit and office manager 16 years at Decatur Memorial Hospital and Decatur Dry Goods.
She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi women?s business sorority and was instrumental in starting the local Decatur chapter.
She married Charles Francis Bass July 4, 1943 during the war. He preceded her in death.
She was active in Girl Scouts, and was a lifetime member of the PTA, Decatur Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the VFW.
She also worked part-time in the credit department at Goldblatt?s Furniture store.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist church more than 50 years, and she volunteered at the church Economy Shop more than 30 years.
In 2014, she moved to Laurie Knolls Assisted Living in Laurie.
She was a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
She is survived by daughters Kathy Carter and her husband Carey of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Patti Doyle and husband Don of Gravois Mills; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Craig, and her husband of 62 years.
Graveside services will be held in Illinois at a later date.
