Helene Bassett
Helene Bassett, who was 87, died at the Westhampton Care Center on Dec. 22.
Mrs. Bassett came to East Hampton as a young girl. She raised her own children here, moved to Arizona, then returned to this area to live with her daughter in Sag Harbor after becoming sick three years ago.
Her parents were John Joseph Fisher and the former Eleanor Miller, and she was born in Brooklyn on Jan. 26, 1921. After completing the earlier grades in Brooklyn, she moved to East Hampton, where she attended East Hampton High School.
She met her first husband, Arthur Ross, while living here. They had two children, both of whom survive: Judith Rana of Sag Harbor and David Ross of East Hampton. She was a leader of the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts while here children were growing up.
The Rosses’ marriage ended in divorce. Mrs. Bassett moved to Arizona in 1959 and married her second husband, Reginald Bassett, shortly afterward. Mr. Ross and Mr. Bassett both died before her.
While living in Mesa, Mrs. Bassett owned a lapidary shop that sold stonework tables and jewelry, among other items. “She loved cats,” her daughter said, had many of her own, and also worked with the Humane Society to care for the strays she did not take in.
Mrs. Bassett is survived three grandchildren as well as by her children.
A funeral service was held on Saturday at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor followed by burial at Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor, the Rev. James Cardone presiding. Donations have been suggested to the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 2725, Sag Harbor 11963.
