Sampson Child Killed
NEWTON GROVE ? A four-year-old boy of the Newton Grove section was killed instantly here Friday afternoon when the pickup truck he was riding was rammed from the rear by a loaded dump truck.
Terry Maxton Bass was riding on the back of a pick-up, being driven by his mother, Mrs. Maxton Bass, when she attempted to make a left turn off Highway 192 about seven miles west of here, Sampson County Coroner Coleman Carter said.
Carter said Mrs. Bass? truck was struck fro the rear by a loaded dump truck driven by Edgar T. Carlton, about 35, of Warsaw. The impact threw young Bass from the pick-up and entangled him beneath its wheels, the coroner said.
Carlton told the coroner he was attempting to pass, but that a third vehicle between his truck and Mrs. Bass prevented him seeing turn signals.
Coroner Carter said he planned no inquest unless one was requested by the parties involved.
In addition to the parents, young Bass survivors include a brother, Puett and a sister, Judith, both of the home; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Willams of Route 3, Plymouth; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walton Bass of Newton Grove, Route 2.
