Marna Amey Bass Shortess
Marna Amey Bass Shortess, a lifetime resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on September 1, 2022. Born on April 15, 1937, in Baton Rouge, Marna was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Judge Melvin Arthur Shortess, parents Anna Amey Bechtold Bass and Samuel Lake Bass, and brother John Lake Bass. Marna is survived by her children Marna Amey Shortess Crousillac and husband James Keith Crousillac, Melvin (Vin) Arthur Shortess, Jr., and partner David Mac McCoy, III, and John Bechtold Shortess and wife Paula Floersch Shortess. Also, grandchildren, Anna Amey Crousillac Crawford and husband Michael Aaron Crawford, Taylor James Crousillac and wife Allison Hood Crousillac, Henry Young Shortess, Anna (Abby) Bechtold Shortess, and Eli Patten Shortess, and great-grandchildren, Adelaide Amey Crawford, and Mary Cate Crousillac. Additionally, brother-in-law Jack Shortess and wife Barbara Shortess, and sisters-in-law Mike Shortess and Liz Shortess, and numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Marna attended Dufrocq Elementary, Baton Rouge High School, Class of 1955, and attended Louisiana State University where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Marna was very active in civic and social organizations including the American Red Cross Capital Area Chapter, Capital Area United Way, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, Junior League of Baton Rouge, Kappa Delta Alumnae Association, Women's Club Inc., La Tertulia, Reviewers Book Club, and Baton Rouge High School Alumnae Association, holding leadership positions in many of these organizations. Marna was a former Queen of the Mystic Krewe of Achilles and received the Order of the Pearl from Kappa Delta. A fabulous cook, making the most wonderful gumbos and salads, Marna loved cooking for her family and friends. Dinners and holidays with family and friends were very special to her. Marna also loved gardening, needlepoint, cross-stitch, and was an avid bridge player, holding dear her bridge friendships. "Marmey" was extremely proud of her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured their visits and attending their many events over the years. Visitation will be at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Tuesday September 6, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with a funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Pallbearers are Taylor Crousillac, Henry Shortess, Eli Shortess, Keith Crousillac, Mac McCoy, Michael Crawford, and Robert Shortess, Jr. The family would like to thank the many health professionals at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Hospice of Baton Rouge, Butterfly Wing. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a contribution to Hospice of Baton Rouge, Our Lady of Mercy Traditions of Tomorrow Campaign, or an organization close to your heart.
