      K. Dwight Bass

      K. Dwight Bass, 78, a resident of Potlatch, Idaho, and former owner and operator of the Log Inn restaurant, died Tuesday morning at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, Idaho, from an apparent heart attack. A memorial service will be on Friday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the Scenic 6 Park at Potlatch. Ordained minister Cecil Groner will officiate the service. Cremation was held prior to the service.

      Dwight was born on June 30, 1925, at Nashville, N.C., to James and Sarah Sykes Bass. He attended his schooling in North Carolina. Dwight enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 23, 1943, and served during World War II in the European-African and Pacific Theaters. He was discharged on Jan. 5, 1946, as a seaman 1st Class.

      He married Nina Nelson on May 28, 1953, at Prineville, Ore. Dwight operated a service station in Oregon for several years. The couple moved to Potlatch, Idaho, in 1970, where they operated the Arco service station in Potlatch for about four years. In 1974, the couple purchased Carter's Log Inn and operated the business until 1985. Dwight also worked for Bennett's Mill as a forklift operator on the night shift for about 10 years until he retired in 1987.

      He was a member of the Potlatch Post No. 10300 at Potlatch, a charter member of the Potlatch Lions Club, an avid pool player, and took up the game of golf at the age of 70.

      Dwight is survived by his wife Nina Bass at the Potlatch home; one daughter, Lisa Nordhagen, of Cedar Lake, Ind.; one sister, Florine Brannon, of Greensboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters, including Dorothy Knott, who died in 1993.
