Deacon Winston Bernard Gilliam (Picture included)
GILLIAM, Deacon Winston Bernard, 66, husband of Arletha Bassett Gilliam, died Friday, January 29, 2009, at his residence in Ettrick, Va. Born in Chesterfield County, October 21, 1942, he was the second oldest son of Erner Mason Gilliam and the late Herbert F. Gilliam Sr. He was a lifelong member of the Union Branch Baptist Church of Chesterfield, Va. Deacon Gilliam was educated in the Chesterfield County Public School System. He was a 1962 graduate of Carver High School of Chester, Va. He was the first employed with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company for more than 23 years, and then with Reynolds Metal Company, retiring in 2003. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene D. Gilliam Sr.; and his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Goldie Bassett Sr. Surviving are his devoted and loving wife, Arletha Bassett Gilliam; daughters, Artrice Harris (Lt. Col. Willie) and Holly Gilliam (Orlando); three grandchildren, Jyree, Arbrianna and William; mother, Erner Gilliam; two sisters, Erna G. Robinson and Gwendolyn G. Cofield; six brothers, Herbert Jr. (Clarissa), William (Joanne), Calvin (Diane), Lester (Pamela), Melvin (Robin) and Marvin Sr. (Patricia) Gilliam; nine sisters-in-law, Julia C. Gilliam, Joyce Lewis (Timothy), Louise Bassett, Juanita Harvey (Mack), Cathy Branch (David Sr.), Goldie Miller, Betty Shelton (Gary Sr.), Sandra Walton (Melvin) and Kimberly Bassett; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Bassett Sr. (Joyce) and Robert Bassett Jr. (Dimple); Roosevelt N. Lewis, who is like a brother; a devoted cousin, Brenda Brown Coles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The public may view Deacon Winston B. Gilliam on Sunday, February 1, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday, February 2, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., where family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 at March Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at Union Branch Baptist Church, 11519 River Rd., Chesterfield, Va. with Dr. Gregory M. Howard officiating. Interment will be held at Union Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
