- He was educated at the district schools, at Colgate Academy, Hamilton, New York,a nd at Bryant & Stratton Business College in Chicago, Illinois. During the winter of 1880-81, he studied telegraphy in the office of the Ontario and Wester RR at North Bay, New York. He continued his studies at Morrisville, New York until the fall of 1881 when he was appointed office agent there. He held that position until March, 1885, when he accepted a position as ranch manager of 6,000 acres in Lonoke County, Arkansas. After a year and half, he entered the employment of H.H. Warner of Rochester, New York. He went to California to look after the interests of H.H. Warner in some gold mines in the norther part of California. He later wa in Lwer California, Mexico, and in San Bernadino County. He returned to New York and bought the "Howard Homestead" of 125 acres, the place of his birth and the home of his father and grandfather. He was still residing there in 1901, raising hops and doing general farming.
