In 1928 the family moved to Anderson, IN, where Den and his older sister Barbara spent a happy childhood until Den graduated from Anderson High School in May 1942 and entered Purdue University. He left college in April 1943 to enlist in the Army Air Corps, attend officer training at Syracuse University, and complete flight training. Den deployed to England and service in the 8th U.S. Air Force where he flew nine combat missions as a B-24 Liberator pilot before war in Europe ended. After re-deployment and an honorable discharge, Den returned to Purdue University to resume engineering studies, join Sigma Chi fraternity, and play two years JV / one season of varsity Big Ten football. He graduated with a B.S. in aeronautical engineering June 1948, and began a 38 year professional career with Pratt-Whitney, Hughes Aircraft, Emerson Electric, and A.B. Chance. Den was a devoted husband and father who married the love of his life Connie (Cronk Lamer) Bassett in April 1970. Den and Connie raised their four children in St. Louis, MO before moving full-time to Siesta Key, FL in 1986. He was a deacon in his Los Angeles and St Louis Presbyterian churches, and participated in Siesta Key Chapel spiritual and community service activities until incapacitated by illness.
