Baylus Sheffield Bassett was born near Canisteo, the son of Baylies
and Esther Crandall Bassett. At the age of five, his family moved to Alfred
(1876) and purchased the South Main Street residence which remained the
Bassett home for sixty-four years. Following the illness and death of
Sheffield's mother in 1891, his father married Mary Reading Gree
Sheffield attended Alfred Academy, later working for the Ehrlich
Clothing Store in Cornell. In 1899, he purchased the Saunders Clothing House
in Alfred which he operated until 1940. He was married to A. Belle Sante
(AU'90) of Hornellsville on April 5, 1909. She passed away in 1937. The couple
had two sons, B. Stockton (AU'32), who died in 1938, and Harold Sheffie
(AU'35).
A respected businessman and owner of numerous Alfred properties,
Sheffield served as a trustee of Alfred University from 1914 to 1944 and was
named honorary trustee, 1944 thru 1948. An avid tennis player, Sheffield gave
the land to Alfred University for the Ford Street tennis courts. He w
member of the Board of Visitors of the New York State Agricultural and
Technical Institute, and a member of the First Alfred Seventh Day Bapti
Church. For many years, he was agent for the Equitable Life Insurance Company
and served that company as district manager, a position he held until h
retirement.
Sheffield passed away on February 14, 1948. Interment was in the
Alfred Rural Cemetery. He was survived by his son Harold Bassett, who died in
February 1986.
