      Baylies S. Bassett was born in Dalton, Delaware County on Ju
      1821, the second of fourteen children born to John Chandler (1826-1909) and
      Martha St. John Bassett. He was raised in Independence, matriculating at
      Alfred University, 1840-41. On September 23, 1849, he married Esther Crandall,
      and to them were born eight children. Moving from Independence in 1866, the
      couple made their home near Canisteo until 1876 when the Horace and Sarah M.
      Easton house in Alfred Center was purchased as their residence. Both Baylies
      and Esther were members of the first Alfred Seven Day Baptist Church. From
      1883-1886, Baylies served as trustee of Alfred University. On September 13,
      1891, following seven years of illness, Esther died in the 60th year of her
      age. She was survived by her husband, six sons, one daughter and three
      sisters. Funeral services and burial were in Independence.
      After the death of his wife, Baylies was married on December 29, 1892
      to Mary Reading Green. He died at his home in Alfred on April 2, 1902.
      Services were at the home and interment was at Independence. He was survived
      by his wife, Mary G.; five sons, Fred L., George C., William C., Sheffield and
      Byron; one daughter, Lotte M. Bassett Rogers and sixteen grandchildre
      His estate included lands and farms in the areas of Alfred, Canisteo
      and Greenwood, and a number of residential properties in the Villages of
      Canisteo, Whitesville and Alfred.


      BIOGRAPHICAL

      Baylies S. Bassett, son of John C. and Elizabeth Bassett, was born in
      1821 in Delaware county, and came to Allegany county with his parents, about
      1826. He remained until 1865, at which date he removed to Canisteo, Steuben
      county, and, in 1876, returned to Allegany county, making Alfred Centre his
      residence. Mr. Bassett married Miss Esther Crandall, of Independence, in 1849.
      He is a farmer and lumberman.

      Was Well Known in This Section And Highly Respected by All Acquaintences

      B.S. Bassett died at his home in Alfred last Wednesday, of paralysis. He was in his 81st year and has been a resident of that village about twenty years. His early life was spent in Independence and he was widely known through this section.
      Mr. Bassett came from Independence to Calisteo in 1886, and was a resident of this town for ten years during which time he held several prominent offices. He owned a large amount of Canisteo property at the time of his death.
      Deceased leaves a wife, five sons and a daughter, Wm. C. of Canisteo; Fred, of Bennetts Creek; Byron, of Whitesville; George H. and Sheffield, of Alfred, and Mrs. D. H. Rogers, of Alfred.
      Three brothers and four sisters also are left of a family of thirteen children, John C. and Frances M. Bassett of Andover; Geo. H. Bassett, of Addison; Mrs. Betsey Kingsbury, of Rushford; Mrs. Julia Chrisman, of Walton, N.Y.; Mrs. Mary D. Clark, of Westerly, R.I.; and Mrs. Lizzie E. Stillman, of Webster, Mass.
      The funeral was held Friday at 10 o?clock from the house.
      Mr. Bassett was in Canisteo March 1, and called at the Times office to renew his subscription. At that time he appeared to be in good health and spirits.
