Adeeb ?Eddie? Bassitt Jr.
A. ?Eddie? Bassitt, 61, mayor of St. Albans from 1985 to 1997, died Dec. 31, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston. Eddie was born Oct. 24, 1942, a son of the late Addeb Edward Bassitt Sr. and Helen Madelyn McCallister Bassitt. He was currently employed by Quick Delivery, South Charleston. He was a Christian and a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, St. Albans, where he served as a member and teacher of the Crusaders Sunday school class and Bible study class. He was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge 58 AF&AM, St. Albans, Scottish Rite Bodies, Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, Kanawha Commandry 004, Tyrian Chapter 13 Royald Arch Masons and Order of the Eastern Star 79, St. Albans. He was a member of the St. Albans Rotary, where he wa named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International, and Loyal Order of the Moose 868 and was on the board of directors of Jericho House and Voters on Watch, St. Albans, the Regional Inter-Governmental Council, the West Virginia League of Municipalities and the Governor?s Summer Disadvantaged Children?s program. He was a former member of the St. Albans Chapter of Toastmasters International, the South Charleston Museum Advisory Board, West Virginia Investment Committee, National League of Cities and the Kanawha County Parks and Recreation Committee. He was named a Distinguished West Virginian by Former Governor Arch A. Moore Jr., was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by former Kentucky Governor William Wilkinson and was a member of the West Virginia Democratic Executive Committee. Eddie graduated from West Virginia State College and completed graduate work at several institutions including West Virginia University, Michigan State University and West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. As an educator, he taught at several area schools including Poca Elementary, Richmond Elementary, Weimer Elementary and St. Albans High schools. In addition to being a longtime mayor of the city of St. Albans, Eddie took great pride in his city and was involved in most every aspect of it from his participation in Project Graduation of St. Albans High School to Saturday night Bingo. Surviving are his sister, Helen Margaret Bassitt of St. Albans; brothers, George Edward Bassitt and wife, Nell Ruth, of Hamilton, Ohio, Dr. William C. Bassitt of Village of Lakeside, Ill., and Pensacola, Fla.; and six nieces and nephews.
