Mrs. Norton Bassett
Mrs. Norton Bassett died at her home near Glendale, July 2, 1896, in
her 78th year. She was born in Lowville, October 3, 1818. Her parents were
Jason and Phebe Searls Mills. When a child she removed with her parents to the
town of Martinsburg and resided the rest of her life in the neighborhood where
she died, with the exception of about one year spent in Green Bay, Wis. August
21, 1838, she was united in marriage with Norton Bassett, with whom she lived
happily until his death, which occurred November 30, 1888. Since then she has
lived with her daughter at the homestead. She was the mother of six children,
two of whom are living, Charles M., a respected citizen of the town of
Martinsburg, and Miss Emma Bassett, who resides in the home now made lonely by
the death of the mother. She also leaves an only sister, Mrs. Caroline Fults,
of Carwith, Iowa.
In early life the deceased experienced religion and for many years it
was her constant practice to read a portion of scripture before retiring, thus
committing herself or the night to the care of the All Seeing One through His
word. She was a good mother and a kind friend and neighbor. Her death was very
sudden, resulting from heart failure. The funeral was held at the home and her
remains were laid to rest in the East Martinsburg cemetery by the side of her
husband, to await the resurrection of the just.

Mrs. Norton Bassett, died Thursday at her home, near Glendale, aged 77
years and 6 months, and the funeral services were held Saturday. Her husband
died seven years ago. One son and one daughter survive, Charles Bassett and
Miss Emma Bassett, of Glendale.
