    Okolona - Services for Mrs. Margie Allen DeMoville, 91, who died Sunday, January 30, 2005 at her daughter's home in Tupelo will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Okolona Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jennifer Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. Lee Memorial/Okolona Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
    Mrs. DeMoville was born in Newton on June 6, 1913 to the late Rayburn Felix and Margaret Rachel Allen Bassett. She was graduated from Mississippi State College for Women (The "W") at the age of 19 with a B.S. in English. Her teaching career included the Egypt School in Chickasaw County where she met her husband, the late J.Q. "Jock" DeMoville, Macon Schools in Noxubee County and substitute teaching in the Okolona Public Schools. She and her husband owned DeMoville Farms, which she oversaw after his death. She had a strong love of the land and its produce and attended area farm meetings until her death.
    Mrs. DeMoville was a past President of the PTA in Okolona, the Lanier Club and was an active supporter of the area's visual and performing arts. She was active later in life as an officer in the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a charter member and officer of the Daughters of the American Colonists. She was an award winning poet and author, having published two books of poetry, a distinguished member of the International Poets Society and was often invited to do workshops with various literary groups, including the "W". She was an active member of the Okolona Presbyterian Church for over six decades where she was an honorary elder, President of the Presbyterian Women, a former pianist and organist and active in the choir. She was an avid Mississippi State fan, a generous and quiet philanthropist and beloved mother. She enjoyed her many travels and cruises in the U.S.A. and around the world and revered her homeplace, Twin Oaks, south of Okolona.
    Survivors include two daughters, primary caregiver, Margaret Jock DeMoville of Tupelo and Dixie Allen DeMoville Johnson and husband, Robert, of Germantown, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Hugh Allen Johnson of New Orleans and Robert Johnson of Jackson; two brothers-in-law, Louie DeMoville of Okolona and Clifford Yanes of Tennessee.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, J.Q. "Jock" DeMoville, who passed away on November 13, 1984; one sister, Dixie Lois Bassett Haynes, one brother, James Lee Bassett.
    Pallbearers will be Nick Chandler, Dr. Lloyd Clark, Harvey Fisher, Bob Henson, John Herrod, Sr., John Herrod, Jr., Walter Koehn, Dr. Reynolds McCain, Houston Minniece, Howard Miskelly, Tonquin Stovall, Charles Wardlaw and Sid Whitlock. Memorials may be made to Okolona Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 142, Okolona, Mississippi 38860.

    John Quin DeMoville, called Jock, was born in Egypt, March 26, 1909. His parents were Larkin Edward and Johnnie Quin Thornton DeMoville. They are the subject of another story in this book. Margie Allen Bassett's parents were Rayborn Felix and Margaret Rachel Allen Bassett of Newton, Mississippi. She graduated from Newton High School and Mississippi State College for Women and taught English at Egypt and Macon high schools prior to her marriage. Jock was a graduate of of Egypt High School and a member of the school of science, class of 1932, of Mississippi A&M College. There, he was a member of Beta Kappa Fraternity. Jock and Margie Allen were married December 20, 1940 in the First Methodist Church, Macon, Mississippi. They first lived in his family's home three miles west of Egypt which they purchased from the other heirs. In 1956 they moved into their new home half way between Egypt and Okolona on highway 45 A. Here their two daughters would grow up.
    Dixie Allen is Jock and Margie Allen's elder daughter. She graduated from Okolona High School and Southwestern at Memphis and taught English and was children's librarian at White Station Library in Memphis. Her husband is Robert Hugh Johnson and they are the parents of Hugh Allen, a student at Memphis University School, and Robert Quin, who attends Christ United Methodist Church School. The DeMoville's second daughter is Margaret Jock who is married to Gary L. Carnathan, an attorney, and lived in Tupelo. Margaret is a graduate of Okolona High School, Mississippi State University, and Trans World Airlines Stewardess School in Kansas City. Before her marriage she lived in New York where she flew with and was a public relations speaker for Trans World Airlines and was a model.
    Margie Allen is very talented literarially and musically. She has published two books of poetry. In her devotion to the Okolona Presbyterian Church she has served as organist for many years. Jock was one of the largest and most successful planters and cattlemen in north Mississippi. Possessing an acute intelligence and capacity for detail, his sense of humor and unusual memory for faces made many friends. His generosity, in both time and money, was widely recognized. Jock was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Okolona at the time of his death. In 1966 he received Okolona's Community Award for oustanding service. Long active in the Mississippi Cattlemen's Association, Jock received that group's certificate of merit for outstanding service in 1962, served as its president in 1968, and, in 1982, was inducted into its Hall of Fame. Magazines and periodicals recognized Jock's accomplishments. In 1965, he and his family received the Master Farm Family of Mississippi Award and were featured in the Progressive Farmer magazine. In March 1958 Jock's cattle operations were the lead story in Mississippi Stockman - Farmer magazine. Commerical Buyer's Guide and Southern Beef Producer carried stories on his cattle and calf business. Jock was a Patron of Excellence for the Mississippi State University Development Foundation and served on its board of directors. He was a colonel on the staffs of Governors Hugh White and John B. Williams and was chairman of the Mississippi Penitentiary Board for two governor's administrations. The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce recognized Jock with its Award for Extraordinary and Outstanding Service to Mississippi Agriculture. He received the Certificate of Merit from the Chickasaw County Soil Conversation District. For many years Jock was chairman of the Chuquatonchee Drainage District. Jock died as a result of an automobile accident November 13, 1984. His worth to his community and delightful, happy personality will be long remembered.
