Enoch Arden Decree Sought
Edna M. Bassett Says Her Husband, Grover C. Bassett, Has Been Gone 14 Years.
Edna M. Bassett, of Westchester county, has applied to the Supreme court for an Enoch Arden decree of annulment from her husband, Grover C. Bassett, who she alleges disappeared 14 years ago and hasn’t been reported alive since. Justice Aldrich has granted an order of publication in the action, which is returnable April 7, when the action will be tried if the defendant is not found. John E. Mack is attorney for Mrs. Bassett in the action.
In her petition she sets forth that they were married July 2, 1905, at Lake Mohegan and that there are six children: Grover C. Jr., 25 years old; Lloyd E., 23; Martha, 21; Willis H. 20; Eva May, 18; and Robert, 15. While they were living at Valhalla, Westchester county, her husband disappeared in March, 1919. Extensive search having failed to solve the mystery of his disappearance, Mrs. Bassett concluded that he is now dead.
Her petition alleges that Eugene Bassett, Sr., the defendant’s father, of Lincolndale, made an unsuccessful search for him, as did Arthur J. Soper, of Poughkeepsie, brother of Mrs. Bassett, George Bassett and Eugene Bassett, Jr. of Yorktown Heights, and Edward Bassett, farmer of the Amawalk-Katonah road, brothers of the defendant.
U.S. Army records failed to assist in the location, the only revelation being that Bassett had been discharged from the Army several years before his disappearance.
