Died Of Smallpox
Death From the Disease at Boone
Boone, May 8. ? A report reached the city Monday that a little child of Ed Bass, of Dodge township, had died of smallbox. Another child is seriously ill and death may result. Mr. Bass has a family of nine children, but so far all of them have not been stricken with the disease.
This is the first death reported in the county from smallpox since the contagion appeared, altho it is claimed that probably 200 or more have been afflicted with the disease. Fraser had been the hot-bed of the contagion and from there it has spread not only to all parts of the county but to many adjoin counties. The health officers are now trying to enforce a rigid quarantine, but the disease has become so widespread that it will be a difficult task to stamp it out.
