    Notes
    • 3B3254 Elias Bassett, son of Edward and Sarah (Sanford) Bassett, was born 17 Mar 1780 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut. He was baptized 26 Mar 1780 at the First Congregatonal Church in Milford, Connecticut. He
died in 1857 in Bennington, Wyoming County, New York. He married (1) (_____) Holcomb before the Aug 1800 census. She died 17 May 1802. This death is recorded at the Granby 1st Congregational Church records (Vol. 2, p 101) (See also: North Granby, Hartford, CT Church Records, p.33 (FHL film #234579 item 5), listing "Death of wife of Elias Bassett" and also in the "Bill of Mortality" town record for Granby dated 17 May 1802. This unnamed wife may have been an as yet undetermined daughter of Consider Holcomb Jr. and his first wife, Hannah (_____) (Possibly Hannah Loomis.) Land transactions among the children of Consider Holcomb Jr. give their mother's name as Hannah.). Elias married (2) Lucy Gillette, daughter of Azariah Gillet, after 1802 in Hartford County, Connecticut. Lucy was born 17 Mar 1778 in Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut. She died between 1840 and 1850 in Bennington, Wyoming County, New York.
No primary source has been found to place our Elias Bassett here, but he is the only Elias Bassett in Connecticut of the correct age. DNA results also place him into the #3B Thomas Bassett family.
The Elias listed in the 1800 census of Granby and his wife were both listed as being between 16-25 years of age putting his birth date between 1774 and 1784.

RESIDENCE: Elias lived in Granby, Hartford, Connecticut when the 1800 census was taken. His son, Loren Elias Bassett, listed his own birth as 5 March 1809 in Granby, Hartford, CT. This family must have been living there at that time. In the censuses where Richard and Alfred were found they listed their places of birth as Connecticut. If this is true, then the family lived in Connecticut until 1813 or after. From 1817 to 1828 Elias was found living in Scott, Cortland, New York. From 1830 to 1857 he lived at Bennington New York, which was in Genesee until 1841 when it became part of Wyoming County.

The Monday, June 17, 1799 issue of the Connecticut Courant newspaper (Vol. xxxiv, p. 3, col. 5) records the following advertisement: "Run-away from the subsriber an indentured apprentice by the name of Elias Basset, 5 feet 3 [or 8] inches high. All persons are forbid harboring or trusting him on penalty of the law. Whosoever will return said boy shall have eight milles reward, but no charges paid, by Ezekiel Cowles, Jun. Farmington, June 14. (The June 17, 1779 date of this event referred to in Apprentices of Connecticut 1637-1900 by Kathy A. Ritter, 1986 is in error).

In 1872, Elias' son, Loren Elias Bassett gave the following information about his father (Endowment House Baptism Record, Book C, p. 467 #22345 (FHL film #183384): "Elias Bassett, born 16 Mar 1775, Connecticut, died: 1857."

YEAR OF BIRTH ANALYSIS: The ages listed for Elias Bassett in the 1800, 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 censuses calculates his year of birth between 1770 and 1780. In the 1850 census he was listed as 72 making his year of birth 1778. See census listings.

Elias' birthplace listed as Connecticut in 1850 census. See details above.

His birthplace also listed as Connecticut in the 1880 census listings of his children Roena, Alfred, Harlow, and Loren Elias.

      ON ELIAS' FIRST WIFE:

On or before 17 Sep 1825, Elias Bassett, his daughter, Mary Amoret (Bassett) Norton, and her husband, Omer Norton returned to Granby, Connecticut from Scott, New York and evidently inherited a small piece of land. They then sold the land to Harlow Gillett (brother of Lucy Gillett, Elias' wife). This land was part of eight acres in Granby apparently belonging to the Holcombs. The following land records and correspondence from researchers working on the Bassett line help to illuminate the details and possible relationships.

Note from Carol Laun (Curator of the Salmon Brook Historical Society, in Granby; written 15 Feb 1999): I still believe, based on the land records, that the first wife of Elias Bassett was a Holcomb. The 8 acres in question was divided into 7 parts for the 7 children of Hannah Loomis Holcomb [wife of Consider Holcomb, II]. Six of the seven parts were sold by identified children of Hannah. The seventh part was sold by Elias Bassett and his daughter. I still feel that the best explanation for this scenario is that Elias' first wife [given name not known] was a daughter of Hannah. Elias and his [first] wife had a daughter [named Amoret or Mary Amoret], the wife died, and her daughter inherited. She was probably a minor when she inherited. Perhaps, that is why her father [Elias Bassett] also signed the deed. The seven children also fit the census records.

Together with all and singular the hereditaments and appurtenances as thereunto belong or in any wise appertaining and Reversion of Reversions, Remainder, and remainders, units, rents, issues and profits thereof and all the Estate Rights, title, interests, claims or demands whatsoever of the said parties of the first part whether in sum or equity of, in and to the above bargained premises with said hereditaments and appurtenances to have and to hold the said premises above described to the said party of the second part, his heirs and assignees to the sole and only proper use benefit and behoof of the said party of the second part his heirs and assignees forever.

In witness whereof the parties of these presents have hereunto interchangeably set their hands and seals to the day & year first above written.

Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of
      John Baxter Elias Bassett
      Silas Gillett Omer Norton
      Amoret Norton (her mark)

Onondaga County. On this seventeenth day of September AD 1825 before me came the above named Elias Bassett, Omer Norton & Amoret Norton his wife known to be the same husband who executed the above indenture and they severally acknowledge that they executed the same for the purposes & uses therein mentioned. All of which I do truly certify.
Recorded Feb., 27, 1826 John Baxter, Commissioner of Deeds.

Quit Claim Deed in 1825 in Granby, Connecticut 17 Sep 1825
"Elias Bafsett of the town of Scott, County of Cortland [NY] with Omer Norton and his wife, Amoret Norton of Spafford, County of Onondaga [NY]" sign for $25 as grantors for property located in Granby. This document is witnessed by John Baxter & Silas Gillet. The property was "located in the vicinity of Salmon Brook on the west side of the turnpike road ... and bounded on the South and East by Jenajh Holcomb and on the south by Abraham Gillett and contains three fourths of an acre of land".

In the 1830 census of New York, Elias Bassett and Omar are found living nine houses from each other in Bennington, Genessee County. The wife of Omer Norton was Mary Amerett Bassett. Given the above deed, Mary must somehow be connected to the Elias Bassett family.

NOTE ON THE ABOVE LAND TRANSACTION: The following comment by Leon Pitman (researcher on the Bassett and Gillett lines) adds some light to the connections between the participants. "... The deed appears to follow a long-standing New England tradition concerning the roles of males and females in land transactions. A man's wife is rarely mentioned in a land deed unless she, the wife, is the true owner of such land. She typically would not own land unless she inherited it from her parents or grandparents. It is likely, therefore, that Amorett and Elias jointly inherited this land and that they are related. It is also possible that Amorett is a Gillett who is related to to Elias Bassett' wife, Lucy. But if that were the case, surely Elias Bassett's wife, Lucy would also have been mentioned in the deed (she was not)."
