    Notes
    • Harvey was born and raised in Jefferson County, Indiana. He married
there and his first six children were born there. After Mary died, he moved to
Jackson county where he married again and there one child was bor
In early 1858, Harvey moved his family to Foster Township, Mari
County, Illinois. There he bought his first land. It was the SE½ of the NE¼
and the N½ of the SE¼ both in Section 22, the first being 40 acres and the
second being 80 acres. And the S½ of the NW¼ of Section 23, which consisted of
80 acres. He paid $2,000 in cash on 22 Apr 1858 and paid the remaining $1,000
on 9 Nov 1860. He bought the land from Richard & Sarah Vickry, who had bought
it from the government. The Vickry's moved to Tarrant County, Texas. This land
had very little improvements and was practically a wilderness. All it had was
a log cabin to live in.
Harvey joined the Union Army and was mustered into service at Salem,
Marion County, Illinois on 18 Sep 1862, at the age of 42. He was in Company I
of the 111th Illinois Infantry. They remained at Camp Marshall, Salem until 31
Oct 1862 when it numbered 930 officers and enlisted me
It is not known how long Harvey was in the war for sure. His so
Algernon S. Bassett, went into the army and took his father's place under his
father's name and therefore there is no record of when Harvey left or when
Algernon went in. Algernon Sidney Bassett, better known as Sid, was in the
army by January of 1865, because his diary comments on the war. Recorded as
being mustered out 7 Jun 1865, but medical records have him being mustered out
      in July of 1865.
After the war, Harvey bought more land until he had 320 acres of land
in sections 15, 22, 23, and 27 of Foster Township. He built a nice two-story
"Saltbox" style home on his land just south of the log cabin. It had two
bedrooms upstairs and downstairs it had two bedrooms, a formal parlor and a
dining-kitchen and a cellar. He also had a large barn and several out-
      buildings.
Harvey and Sarah worked hard, as all Illinois farmers had to do, but
they prospered and provided well for their children. Harvey had a live-
hired hand named John Wheeler, who had been born in Kentucky and whose mother
was from Ireland and father was from Scotland.
After Harvey's death, Sarah continued to live in the homestead. Her
son Elmer lived there with her and he took over the farm. She applied for a
pension, which she received because she was a widow of a soldier. Sarah lived
to see two of her children die, two of her grandchildren and one great-
grandchild die. But also she lived to see 15 of her grandchildren born and six
      great-grandchildren.
Politically, Harvey was a member of the Republican Party. He he
several township offices and took a great interest in politics. The Bassetts
were a highly respected and well-known family, thus carrying on the great name
      of Bassett.
