Sergt. Samuel was a cooper and farmer. He and Dorcas Bassett -- probably his aunt -- bout a farm in Coventry a little distance east from where the creek from Quidneck Reservoir crosses the railroad, an old dam on this creek on the west line of the farm serving as a roadway, as well as the remains of a mill-race and old mill foundations were still to be seen in 1924.
Samuel removed to Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., Vermont, then to Otsego Co., New York, first settling in Pittsfield in 1797 and then in Burlington in 1800. Not long before his death, he parcelled out his farm among his children, giving deeds.
Elizabeth Stone, Waite Bassett, Tabitha Bassett, and Sarah Chapin were all named in the will of their Aunt Alice Bassett of Coventry in 1805 (1803?). Samuel Bassett III's children were probably all born in Coventry, Rhode Island.
Sergt. Samuel Bassett served in Capt. William Roy's Company in Cole Kassons Regiment of Militia, State of Rhode Island. (From page 165 of a private collection in the library of Col. Snepley of Providence, Rhode Island.)
He also served as a private in Capt. Joseph Davis's Company of North Kingston, Dyre's Regt., from 22 August to 31 August 1778.
