J. Bassett
Josephine Bassett, a community activist for many years, died of a heart attack last Thursday in her house on Madison Street, Sag Harbor. She was 82.
Mrs. Bassett was president of the Old Sagg Harbour Committee, a civic organization, for about 20 years until the 1960s. ?She was always interested in old houses and was always trying to get Sag Harbor conscious of its own old, beautiful homes,? said her sister, Geraldine Moylan of Sag Harbor. Mrs. Bassett was also politically active, serving as a County Democratic Committee woman for many years.
She was born in Brooklyn July 4, 1930, to Edward O?Halloran and the former Mary Fitzpatrick. Her family moved to Sag Harbor when she was tow. She dropped out of Pierson High School after two years to work as a machine engraver at a steel-late factory in Sag Harbor owned by E.P,. Eaton. She worked until she married Lloyd Bassett in 1925. Her husband predeceased her.
Besides Mrs. Moylan, Mrs. Bassett is survived by two other sisters, Roseleen O?Halloran of Sag Harbor and Peggy Becker of Floral City, Fla., and two nieces.
Services were Friday at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor and Saturday at St. Andrew?s Church there, of which she had been a member. The body was cremated.
