It is supposed that he was killed in the engagement. He had served in Virginia in the Battles of Bull Run, Ball's Bluff, Yorktown, West Point, Fair Oaks, Peach Orchard, Savage Station, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill and 2nd Bull Run.
His cemetery headstone states:
