- Alonzo was a farmer who worked hard; was a God fearing man who cared about his family and neighbors; loved and respected the land, as well as all of God's Creations. Being a debout Methodist, he served the Steels Creek Methodist Church as Elder and in other offices. He also served on the Pleasant Grove Board of Education.

Funeral Rites Are Held in Thorton for L.E. Bassett
Funeral services were held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at the First Methodist Church in Thornton for L.E. Bassett, age 83, of Pleasant Grove, who passed away at home of his daughter in Groesbeck, following a long illness.
Mr. Bassett was born April 30, 1872, in Rush County, Texas, the son of John and Elizabeth Bassett. He came to Limestone County and settled in the Pleasant Grove community in 1893. He was married Nov. 17, 1895 to Miss Josephine Richardson, who survives him.
Deceased is also survived by two sons, Carl Bassett of Fort Worth and Leslie Bassett of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Vera Beard and Mrs. Vey Shelton of Groesbeck. He is also survived by two brothers, Luther Bassett of Henderson, and J.T. Bassett of Marshall; three sisters, Mrs. J.M. Clewis, Waco; Mrs. Willie White, Galveston, and Mrs. Verna Lovelace, Salinas, Calif. He leaves 15 grandchildren of 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bassett was a prominent farmer in the Pleasant Grove community and a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and served as a church official in the Steele's Creek Methodist Church. Rev. J.L. Ray of Fort Worth, a former pastor, and Rev. T.E. Caldwell, Baptist pastor, conducted the services.
Interment was in the Thornton Cemetery under the direction of Fisher and Nance.
The following grandsons served as pallbearers. Garnel Beard, Logan Bassett, James Shelton, Gly Bassett, Wayne Bassett and Orland Little.

Richarson of Bishop, Mrs. W.A. Davis, Uvalde; Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Lehman and Junette of Conroe; Mr. and Mrs. Gen West, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Bassett and sons, Wayne and Perry, Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Bassett of Houston; Mr. and Mrs. Logan Bassett and Larry, Mrs. Billy Roy Sanders of Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Calame of Worth and Mrs. Ann Beard of Mexia, Gly Bassett of San Marcos.
