Elsie Moncus Bassett, 96 of Phenix City, Alabama passed away Wednesday at the Columbus Hospice House. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. EST in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy 431 N and 280 W., Phenix City, AL with burial to follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens. Nephews will serve as honorary pall bearers.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bassett was born April 9, 1916 in Randolph County, Alabama, daughter of the late Lillus Crawford Moncus and Hattie Lashley Moncus. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Thomas Bassett. Mrs. Bassett was a member of North Phenix Baptist Church, Alabama Home and Community Leaders/Russell County's Summerville Club since 1986, where she served as club secretary for 19 years. She was a member of the Alabama Home and Community Leaders County Council where she served as Member-At-Large for more than 20 years and a member of the Alabama Home and Community Leaders State Association (AHCL) since 1986. Mrs. Bassett was an experienced crafter and entered many arts and crafts items in the Chattahoochee Valley Fair and the AHCL State Association Cultural Arts competition. She won many awards for her crafts. Mrs. Bassett received the Russell County Rural Leadership Award through the Russell County Cooperative Extension System in 1998. She also was very active with the Relay For Life for the American Cancer Society .
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Bassett Brassell and son-in-law, Albert M. Brassell of Jacksonville, FL, grandson, Jonathan David Dennis of Huntsville, AL and nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Columbus Hospice,
