Lewis Edward Bassett
(ROANOKE) - Services for Lewis Edward Bassett, 71, of Roanoke will be Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church with the Revs. Kenneth Perry and Kenneth Johnson and Wayne Cowhick officiating. Mr. Bassett will lie in state one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Bassett died Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Randolph Medical Center.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:30 until 8 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.
Mr. Bassett is survived by one daughter, Sarah A. Benefield of Ranburne; four sons, Kirby Bassett of Napoleon, Charles Bassett of Roanoke, Bill Bassett of Rock Stand and Pat Bassett of Roanoke; two sisters, Anna Allen of Roanoke and Louise Foster of LaGrange; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Napier, Michael Triff, Johnny Sanders and June Waldrop.
Mr. Bassett was born Oct. 29, 1934, the son of James and Nora Padgett Bassett. He was a member of Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church, had been a self-employed farmer and welder, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Bassett was preceded in death by his wife, Sara K. Bassett. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
