Lee Gardner Bassett, of Troy, was born June 10, 1900, at that place. He is the son of John H. and Sarah Ellafair (Meredith) Bassett, both of Bullock County; grandson of Andrew Jackson and Sarah Ann (Bulger) Bassett, of Postoak, and of Samuel and Rebecca (Spivey) Meredith, of Mt. Hilliard, Bullock County.
The original American ancestor, William Bassett, was a Captain in the English Army. His son was an architect and built Williamsburg Court House in Virginia in 1677.
Representative Bassett attended the public schools of Pike County and is a merchant and farmer. He was elected to the Board of Commissioners of his County in 1934 and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1950, for a term of four years. He is a Democrat, a Missionary Baptist and a Mason. Married: Gennie Mozelle, daughter of Asa and Mozelle (Richardson) Jimright, of Banks, Alabama. Children: 1. Ruth Fair; m. Harold R. Collins.
