- Leonard Lynn Bassett, son of Frank Horace and Alice (Scruby) Bassett, was born 11 Jul 1885 in Farwell, Clare County, Michigan (Alice Mae birth certificate lists his palce of birth as Pincomming, Bay County, Michigan). He died 1 Aug 1970. He married Ruby Mae Moran, daughter of Jessie Barnett and Ida Mae (Delamater) Moran, on 23 Jan 1910. She was born 23 Jul 1886. She died 26 Dec 1967 in Springfield, Missouri. Early in his career with International Harvestor Company, he was transferred to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from Atlanta, Georgia.

Len Bassett of Springfield and his son and daughters-in-law of Kansas City were here Sunday afternoon visiting old friends.

From the "Wheeling Centennial" on page 11 he was included in a group photograph taken for the "Street Fair and Carnival 1904" as "1st clown Linn Bassett."
Leonard followed in his father's footsteps by also working for International Harvester Co., as noted on the 1910 census. Early in his career he was transferred to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from Atlanta, Georgia. From Mae Alice's birth certificate, in 1911 they were living at 368 Hill Street, Atlanta, Fulton County, and Leonard was 28 and Ruby 24. Their son Leonard, Jr. was born in Atlanta in 1913. In Sioux Falls, they lived at 1307 South Prairie.
From the "Wheeling Centennial, 1866-1966" page 7, notes that "Len Bassett" was one of six men who saved the "J.B. Livery barn...during the fire that destroyed the hotel next door" near the intersection of Grant and Front streets. No date for the fire given.
At some time during the 1920’s it is their daughter Vangie’s recollection, told to Kathleen Nadsady (September 2001) that Leonard was prosecuted for theft from the International Harvester Co., which resulted in the family being forced to survive by allowing relatives to help raise the young children. Vangie also stated that she saw her father dress up in his Ku Klux Klan outfit.
Leonard’s social security application (number 495-10-9703) dated January 19, 1937 shows him living at 3419 Garner St. Kansas City, Mo, and working for Milling Machinery, Inc. located at 600 Mutual Bldg. Kansas City. The application shows his birthplace as Farewell, Michigan. His son Leonard Jr. social security number is 495-10-9704, and shows the same residence, working at the same company and applied for on the same day.
From the 1942 Kansas City, Missouri Director, Leonard Sr., Ruby and son Leonard Jr. were living at 317 S. Mersington Ave. Both men were employed as painters. Ruby died 26 December 1957, at Springfield, Mo. "Grandpa" died 1 August 1970 in Springfield, and both are buried at Wheeling Cemetery.

Bassett Services to be Sunday at Wheeling. Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Mae Bassett, 71, of Springfield will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Christian church in Wheeling. Burial will be in the Wheeling cemetery under the direction of the Meinershagen Funeral Home. Mrs. Bassett was a cousin of Mrs. J. F. Meinershagen, Stanley Scruby and Horace Scruby and a former resident of Chillicothe and Wheeling. Mrs. Bassett died Thursday at her home in Springfield after an illness of three months. She lived in Kansas City 27 years, moving to Springfield in June, 1957. Surviving are her husband, Leonard L. Bassett, of the home; three sons, Frank C. Bassett, Kansas City; Leonard B. Bassett, Parkville; Ernest H. Bassett, of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Donald Swartz, Riverside, Calif., Mrs. William Scott, and Mrs. Clarence M[N]adsady, Sun Valley, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. R.E. Sanderson and Mrs. Charles Shackleford, Clay County, and 19 grandchildren.
