Carolyn Hearthway Quillin, 101, of Ocean City died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Coastal Hospice by the Lake in Salisbury.
One of four children of Walter E. and Florence Hearthway, she was born June 4, 1909, in Snow Hill. Her late siblings were brothers Lester and Edward Hearthway, both of Snow Hill; and a sister, Nellie Gibbons of Snow Hill.
She was married for 51 years to Alan S. Quillin, who died in 1982. The couple first made their home in Ocean City in 1931. For many years, they lived on what is now Old Bridge Road and later built a home on Golf Course Road.
Mrs. Quillin worked for 38 years at Hess Apparel, primarily on West Main Street in Salisbury and at Ninth Street and the Boardwalk in Ocean City. She retired at age 81, concluding her Hess career at the company's Montego Bay store in 1991. Lewis Hess, the late founder of the small dress-store chain, and his late son, John, often spoke of Mrs. Quillin as "our most loyal employee."
Often when asked the secret to her longevity, Mrs. Quillin credited the immense love she received from her family and many devoted church friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Quillin Bassett of Ocean City; her grandson, Greg Bassett and his wife, Catherine, of Quantico; her granddaughter, Lisa Bassett Fraze and her husband, Michael, of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Andrew Will Bassett, Jacob Michael Fraze, Nicholas Alan Fraze and Caroline Anne Bassett; a sister-in-law, Mildred Hearthway of Snow Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A life member of First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City, Mrs. Quillin was the congregation's oldest member. She volunteered at the church for more than 80 years, working at Grace Parker Breakfasts, helping at numerous rummage store sales and fundraisers and serving as a church deaconess and secretary. For decades, her task was to hand church bulletins to everyone who attended.
She was a life member of the Ocean City Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and Worcester County Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
A celebration of her life will be held today at noon at First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City. Pastor Alex Ayres will officiate. A private interment will be this morning in Buckingham Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Berlin. Arrangements are being handled by Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
Donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1301 Philadelphia Ave., Ocean City, Md. 21842; or to the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Company, 1409 Philadelphia Ave., Ocean City, Md. 21842.
