James Lee Bassett
Bassett - James Lee "Jim" Bassett, an environmental engineer for the state of Mississippi, died Wednesday of cancer of St. Donimic Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson, Miss. He was 43. Mr. Bassett was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and lived in Covington for 15 years before moving to Brandon, Miss., four years ago. He received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Alabama and a master's degree in geophysics from the University of Houston. He began his career in 1973 as a geophysicist for Louisiana Land & Exploration. Later, he was in independent geophysicist working with Langham Petroleum, Graham Energy and Edge Petroleum. He was the founder and former president of Bassett Energy in 1989. He merged Bassett Energy with Paramount Petroleum of Jackson and continued with Paramount Petroleum until 1992. He was on many boards in both Covington and Jackson including River Forest Academy and Word of Life Christian Center, both in Covington. He was a top-ranked tennis player and won tournaments in Louisiana and Mississippi. He was a former member of Beau Chene Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Connie Reed Bassett; his mother, Joyce Hunt of Pettus, Texas; a son, James Lee Bassett Jr.; two daughters, Jennifer Lee and Rebekah Anne Bassett; three brothers, Charles Luther Bassett of Plano, Texas, Aaron Howell of Pettus and Robin Howell of San Antonio. Visitation will be today from 11 a.m. until the funeral at 2 p.m. at Schoen Funeral home, 1414 S. Tyler St. in Covington. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
