Peggy Roberts Bassett
Peggy Roberts Bassett, 80, died Dec. 4, 2016 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, South Carolina. She was born in 1936 in Fairfax, Alabama, and grew up in Roanoke, Alabama. Her parents, The Reverend John Wallace and Vennie Lee Roberts, preceded her in death.
In 1955, she married her hometown sweetheart, Fred Bassett, and supported him as he pursued four academic degrees. During those years, her work experiences included Secretary to the Vice President of a large company in Birmingham and Special Assistant to the President of a major agency in Atlanta. She then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Limestone College and a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina.
When her two sons were born, Peggy prepared herself to become a school teacher, so that her schedule would correspond with theirs. She excelled as a language arts teacher for twenty-one years. Her students have praised and honored her through the years for the positive influence she had upon them. One of her former students established a writing award in her name at Hilton Head Preparatory School, where she last taught.
She was active in a variety of civic, philanthropic, and social organizations wherever she lived. In Greenwood, she was a member of McKissick Study Club and First Baptist Church.
Peggy was loving, kind, compassionate, inquisitive, and progressive. She was a lover of books, an eager traveler, and an enthusiastic patron of the arts. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was loved by family and a host of friends, who will greatly miss her.
She is survived by her husband, Fred; her son Michael; her son Jonathan and his wife, Lori; her grandchildren, Lucas and Ella; and her sister and brother-in-law, Myra and Ken Hill.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Greenwood. The family will receive friends in the parlor immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any charitable institution, including the scholarship she and her sister, Myra, established in honor of their parents: Wallace and Vennie Lee Roberts Memorial Scholarship Fund at Southern Union State Community College, 750 Roberts Street, Wadley, AL 36276.
