      Ruth Bassett Collins

      Ruth Bassett Collins passed away Thursday, November 9, 2006 at a local hospital. She was a native of Troy, Alabama and a long time resident of Mobile. She was preceded in death by her parents Jeannie and L. Gardner Bassett. She is survived by her hsuband of 65 years Dr. Harold R. Collins; her sons Dr. H. Ray Collins, Jr. (Sheila) and Gene B. Collins (Marleen); two granddaughters Jean Clair Collins and Catherine Rae Collins and one step-granddaughter Sandy Y. Lamb (Ernest) and two step great grandchildren Justin B. Young and Katherine Elizabeth Lamb. Mrs. Collins was a graduate of Troy High School and earned the bachelors, masters, and Ed. S. Degrees and had finished all course work toward her Ph.D. when she interrupted her academic program to accompany her husband to Mobile. During her career as an educator she served as teacher, supervisor, and administrator. Her final position was as the federal programs director of a 72 school consortium in the Southeast. She and her husband were appointed as adjunct professors and taught graduate school courses in Tehran, Mexico City, Bogota, Kula Lumpur, Madrd and Manilla. She was a founding member of Omicron Delta Kappa. After retiring she initiated hobbies in china paiting, making lace drape porcelain figurines, France hand sewing and bridge. She was invited as an exhibitor to the International China Painters Conference in Rio and the following year in Hong Kong. She was also an avid reader. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mobile as well as many other professional and social organizations. She was a devoted mother and wife who always put her family first. She shared her husband's passion for travel especially on the QEII on which they had planned another around the world cruise. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Visitation will be held at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy, Alabama on Monday November 13, 2006 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. The funeral service will be held at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, November 13, 2006 at 11:00 AM with Dr. James Walters and Reverend W.O. Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Troy. A memorial service will be held in Mobile on Thursday, November 16, 2006 at First Baptist Church of Mobile at 2:00 PM. The family request that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
