Samuel Houston (Bunk) Bassett
Our grandfather, Sam Houston (Bunk) Bassett, given name at birth was Therad, changed his name to Sam Houston; when unknown? On the 1870 Texas, Rusk County Census, he is listed as Bunk. On the 1880 Census he is listed as Therad. On the 1910 Census, he is listed as Samuel H. Bassett. He was known as Bunk. He was born September 22, 1867 in Alabama and died September 17, 1945 in Rusk County, Texas. He was married to our grandmother, Margaret Allina (Maggie) Vinson Bassett on January 12, 1899 in Texas. Our grandmother, Maggie Bassett, was born November 4, 1877, in Rusk County, Texas, and died May 3, 1956, in Houston, Texas. Both Samuel H. Bassett and his wife, Maggie, are buried at Crims Chapel Cemetery near Henderson, Texas.
William P. Bassett, father of Samuel Houston Bassett, was born July 27, 1822, in Gwinnett County, Georgia and died October 8, 1904, at Henderson, Rusk County, Texas. He had three wives and 18 children. He enlisted and served in the Civil War at Salem, Alabama, April, 1862. He was captured at Nashville, Tennessee, December 15, 1864, and sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois, was released June 18, 1865. William Parnell Bassett and wife Vandoosan (mother of Samuel Houston Bassett) are buried at New Prospect Cemetery, near Henderson, Texas. Vandoosan Jones (Russell County, Alabama marriage records spelling of Vandoosan as Von Dozier) and William P. Bassett married December 11, 1866. Vandoosan Jones Bassett was born August 29, 1844, in Alabama, and died March 12, 1930, at Henderson, Rusk County, Texas.
John Bassett, born ca 1787 in Georgia and died ca 1859 in Troup County, Georgia, and wife, Agatha Heard Bassett, born ca 1798 in Georgia, father and mother of William Parnell Bassett, were married August 16, 1814 in Georgia and buried in a cemetery near West Point Lake. There is no way to get to the cemetery as there is no longer a roadway; the brush is thick and heavy to try to walk to the area. John Bassett enlisted in the War of 1812, November 21, 1814, and served until March 8, 1815.
Richard and Ann Bassett, father and mother of John Bassett, were buried on their homestead near West Point, Georgia. There were markers on the gravesite at one time. There is a memorial marker to Richard and Ann Bassett at Hillview Cemetery at La Grange, Georgia, placed there by Winnie Robinson, a relative. Marker is marked thus, "Richard Bassett, Sr., Lee's Legion, Revolutionary War 1760-1840, wife, Ann 1770-1841."
Our grandparents, Sam Houston (Bunk) and (Maggie) Vinson Bassett had seven children: Mary Lee Bassett, born August 11, 1899, died September 15, 1989 in Henderson, Texas married Clarence G. Greeman, born September 27, 1894, died January 31, 1965. They were married October 14, 1917 and had two children: Lorel Freeman, born August 22, 1918, who married Sam Hill on May 18, 1956, and Clarence Melvin Freeman, born April 24, 1920 and married Agnes Collins, born September 10, 1920, on July 3, 1947. They have three sons: Billy Don, George and Glenn Freeman and five grandchildren. William P. Bassett, born July 18, 1902, died March 14, 1990, who married Mattie Goodlett, born October 17, 1905, died November 19, 1989, on July 21, 1926, and had three children: Louise Bailey Warren, Doris Murphy and David Bassett. Louise married Bennie Bailey, who died February 10, 1969. Louise is now married to Johnny Warren. Louise has two children: Kevin Bailey and Sherry Bailey and one grandchild, Benjamin Davis Bailey. Doris Bassett Murphy, born April 7, 1929, married Steve Murphy, born January 13, 1923, on November 6, 1948. They have three children: Kenneth Wayne Murphy, born February 15, 1950, married Dona Ruth Chaistain on January 1, 1990, Reba Darlene Murphy Mitchell, born June 15, 1951, and married Buddy Clark Mitchell on September 22, 1972, and Donna Lynn Murphy Holder, born October 12, 1956 and married Gorlon Lee Holder on December 30, 1976. Doris has grandchildren: Christopher Wada Murphy, Karrie D'Ann Murphy and Buddy Clark Mitchell, Jr. William David Bassett, born January 20, 1942, married Carmon Maxine (Tommie) Allen on May 1, 1965 and they have two children: Harold Lee Bassett, born September 14, 1966 and Melanie Deanne Bassett, born June 19, 1968.
Juliette Bassett, born October 5, 1903, and died September 2, 1990, was married to Sam Bozeman. Emma Pearl Bassett Brown Wylie, born April 13, 1906, died June 8, 1987; children: Charline Brown Shattuck, born December 12, 1926, married Alvin Shattuck, born December 10, 1922, and one son, John David Shattuck, born September 5, 1964. John David married Martha Asher, born March 11, 1967; Jane Brown Nicholson, born April 29, 1928, has one daughter, Susan Joy Nicholson Morton, born July 21, 1964, and two grandchildren: Misty Suits and Kyan Morton; Austin Larry Brown, born May 7, 1933, married Delores Hart and has children: Lane, Tommy, and Tammy Brown Boyd and grandchildren: Jessica, Allyson and Vanessa Brown and Whitey and Ray (Trey) Boyd, III; Sidney Bassett Brown, born November 9, 1936, is married to Sue Todd Brown and has one daughter Stacy Lois Brown (Mrs. Randy) Knipe.
John Luell Bassett, born January 18, 1912, married Nell Vise, born December 11, 1913, died February 25, 1984, on March 27, 1932 and they had three sons; John Ferrell Bassett married Betty Jo Reardon and they have three sons: John Charles, Richard and Randall Bassett. Doyle Bassett, now deceased, married Fonda Kee and they had two sons: Damon and Darin Bassett. W.C. Bassett married Karen Thomas and they have three children: Mark, James and Lynn Bassett Belcher.
Sidney Earl Bassett, born October 11, 1908, was killed accidentally at age fifteen, December 26, 1923.
Edgar Houston Bassett, born July 12, 1917, died as an infant, July 17, 1917. Sidney Earl and Edgar Houston Bassett are both buried beside their parents in Crims Chapel Cemetery, Henderson, Rusk County, Texas.
