Charivari Fun Ends Up In Wild Shooting Spree
The fun and games at a charivari for a Liberal couple nearly ended in tragedy December 29, 1947. Liberal's Main Street was crowded with people ready to give Luther Mattingly and his bride a proper beginning to married life. One of the crowd, the bride's grandson, Don Sherron, had brought along a shotgun to add to the festive atmosphere. As the crowd was headed toward the restaurant Mattingly owned, the shotgun accidentally went off. The surprised boy then accidentally jammed the gun and the crowd was sprayed with round after round of buckshot from the automatic pump gun. No one was seriously injured, but eight people required medical attention from Dr. Kneeland. According to the published report, the doctor spent most of the evening digging buckshot out of the victims. Among the injured were Miss Jean McClendon, a Barton City schoolteacher, who was hit in the forehead and the knee; Lenore Hamm, hit in the knee and the stomach; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Blackman and their daughter, Judy, were hit in the legs; and Oliver Webb was hit in the thumb.

Luther Mattingly Dies
Luther Mattingly, 71, a resident of Burgess, Missouri, the past six years, died unexpectedly at his home at 10 a.m. Monday. Mr. Mattingly had been mowing the yard, went and sat down in a chair when he suffered a heart attack. Mr. Mattingly was born September 29, 1888 in Barry County, Missouri. He was near a lifetime resident of Barton county, and a retired farmer. He married Mrs. Minnie Sherron of Liberal December 25, 1947 in Minden. Survivors in addition to the widow of the home are three daughters and one son by a former marriage, Mrs. Bertha Hull, Chetopa, Mrs. Mahalla Tucker, Kansas City, Mrs. Geneva Murphy, Kansas City, Missouri, Harold Mattingly, Liberal; two brothers, Ernest Mattingly and Brit Mattingly, both of Exeter, Missouri; three sisters, Mrs. Trilla Clardy and Mrs. Mary May, both of Exeter, and Mrs. Lillie Nichols, California; sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Church of God of Prophecy in Liberal with the Reverend C.W. Risner of Olathe, Kansas, officiating. Reverend and Mrs. Richard Talbott sang, "I'm Moving Across the River" and Reverend Talbott sang, "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" as a solo. Mrs. Clarence Whisler accompanied the singers. Casketbearers were Earl Mays, Fred Bartelli, Sr., George Gesslein, Norman Crain, Marion Johnson, and Rex Jackman. Interment was in the Liberal City Cemetery under direction of the Montanye Funeral Service of Mulberry.
