Rodney G. Bassett's Death
Rodney G. Bassett, one of St. Albans oldest and most respected citizens, died at his residence on North Main Street yesterday afternoon after a long illness.
Mr. Bassett was born in Montpelier June 26, 1815. His early life was spent in Montpelier. January 21, 1849, he married Lucy A. Willard, they being the first couple to be married in the new town of East Montpelier. After their marriage they went to Windsor and then moved to Northfield where in June, 1849, he began to work for the Central Vermont road, having charge of the freight repairs. When the railroad shops were moved here, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett took up their residence here. Mr. Bassett continued in the employ of the railroad until he met with an accident 12 years ago. Since then he has been an invalid.
Mr. Bassett was one of the first to response to the call for troops in 1861, going out as a three months' man in Co. F., First Regiment, Vermont Volunteers. At the expiration of three months he was discharged on account of sickness.
Mr. Bassett was made a Mason in Franklin Lodge, No. 4, November 5, 1878. He was made a member of Champlain Chapter, No. 1, March 17, 1875, and became a life member in May, 1881. Mr. Bassett was also an Odd Fellow and a member o A. R. Hurlbut Post, G.A.R.
Mrs. Bassett and an adopted son, Dr. J. J. Willard, of Pueblo, Col., survive him. The funeral will be held from the home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. He will be buried with Masonic honors.
